Christmas is coming, and if you are wondering what to buy as a gift for that friend/relative/family who is an active user of Micro Four Thirds system, and I am making a short list of 3 items which might just be the perfect gift.
I acknowledge that there are so many gift ideas available already, such as lens pouch, stylish neck straps, memory cards, spare batteries, tripods, camera bags, and the list goes on and on. Nevertheless, these are very specific gifts that can actually significantly add versatality and functionality to that photography enthusiast who particularly use Olympus system, and the best part of all, these gift ideas do not cost an arm or a leg.
1) Olympus Macro Converter MCON P02
Cost: USD50
A shot taken with M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8 lens, without the MCON P02 Macro Converter
Same shot with the previous taken with M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8 with MCON P02 Macro Converter attached
14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ + MCON P02 Macro Converter
This is basically a macro filter, to be attached to the front of an existing lens. Make sure that the beneficiary of this macro converter has a lens with the filter diameter of 37mm or 46mm opening. The macro converter allows the lens to focus closer to the subject, thus providing larger magnification of the subject. This is a good alternative to a macro lens, since it is small, easy to use, and can work well with a plethora of lenses (12mm F2, 17mm F1.8, 17mm F2.8, 25mm F1.8, 45mm F1.8, kit lens 14-42mm).
2) Olympus 9mm F8 Fisheye Body Cap Lens
Cost: USD90
9mm F8 Fisheye Body Cap Lens on E-M10
9mm F8 Fisheye Body Cap Lens on E-M10
The second recommended gift idea from me is the inexpensive Olympus 9mm F8 Fisheye body cap lens. It primarily acts as a body cap, and can be used as a fixed F8 pseudo fisheye lens that provides a super wide angle coverage. The lens creates distorted image similar to the effect achieved by using a fisheye lens, and is considerably good in overall image quality. The biggest advantage of this fisheye body cap lens is the superbly tiny size, which is negligible in weight and size and can be slotted easily in your pocket or in the camera bag without wasting any space. This is also a lens that can create dramatically different photography output, an interesting gift to encourage the friend/family/relative to shoot see the world and shoot differently! 3) Olympus ECG-1 or ECG 3 GRIP
External Camera Grip for E-M10 or E-M10 Mark II ONLY
Here is a quick video demonstration I have recorded to show how the ECG Grip works on E-M10, with the innovative quick release mechanism.
Christmas is coming! Though it is hot and sunny in Malaysia we do get long holidays, and I intend to do plenty of shutter therapy. I just can't wait. Happy holidays!
Great list, really wish that macro converter could support more lens, like 12-40 or even 40-150 :D
ReplyDelete12-40mm and 40-150mm already have excellent close up shooting capabilities, far exceeding what the MCON P02 can do on the other lenses! Think of it as these lenses already has the converter "built in".
DeleteGreat! More reasons for me to get the 12-40 and 40-150 pro lens. Hehe...
DeleteBuy buy buy!
DeleteNice list Robin.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alan!
Deletebecause it's on a micro 4/3's camera is the 9mm now an 18mm?
ReplyDeleteThat calculation applies to all focal lengths, except fisheye. I am very, very sure that the fisheye is a lot wider than 18mm.
DeleteGreat ideas, Robin. And, Happy Holidays to you too!
ReplyDeleteHappy holidays!
DeleteI was always impressed that Olympus could have a clip-on converter that would give such good quality results but the teleconverters for the IS-series cameras were always so expensive. This macro converter is quite good, and since I have two lenses with 46mm filter threads, that could be an option.
ReplyDeleteAnd the best part, it is small, light so easy to carry around! Useful when there is a need to do close up shooting.
Deletethanks for the list. I shall consider this for his birthday instead. haha.. now with baby, a lot of expenses eh.. :D
ReplyDeleteThank you for the advice!!!! Thinking about the converter, I bought Kenko macro tubes for m4/3 with a very good rebate. So I am very happy and thankful to you because it all begun from your post!!!
ReplyDeleteDoes the Fisheye produce the rectangular images you showed or did you use S/W to correct or crop image to rectangular? Looking for a way to create some interesting food photography photos.. like shopping for items in store... for tweaking a eBook cookbook: veggiepowerburgers.com eBook with gluten free, vegan options and hyperlinked to website health talks like "Is Sugar Toxic?"
ReplyDeleteMy wish list for January, now that you did the 40-150 R review is Firmware 4.0 hands on review... great site, great pictures and wonderful shopping suggestions, add the black canvas Olympus bag to list it is great and inexpensive!
The grip for the E-M10 makes such a huge difference - I can only recommend to every E-M10 user to at least try it once.
ReplyDeleteI guess the fish-eye bodycap will be my next. My widest prime is the 17mm and I'm still hesitant to invest that much money into the 12mm because I doubt that I would use it that much.

ReplyDeleteThanks Robin for the great list! now I found a reason to break my piggy bank! haha!! A question for advise, 9mm F8 Fisheye Body Cap Lens (BCL-0980) and FCON-P01, what differences will they make? I have not tried fisheye lens before. So want to get one of this to play around.
