Love it after just ...I found it at the right price. Love it after just a few days. It has character from good micro contrast, which is best seen here in the "cat in jail" photo. There is a massive amount of color detail in that photo rather than just resolution detail. A few photos were out of focus, but valid to keep in as it is a pain to focus with at first. I have just discovered that at f8, focusing on a subject 10 feet away gives you 4.5 meters to infinity in focus. Therefore, I will be simply using this from now on.

The way it handles bright light is interesting too, it is like a halo or smudge on the glass. Going to try it with a CPL too to see what happens there.

By the way, this lens is sharper than my Panasonic 25 1.7 and 12-32mm at the closest settings. I think my 25 may be a bit of a dud though. Mine is black and bought in 2017, I wonder if it has been updated since the silver version came out about 8 years ago, as the old reviews do not describe the same attributes as my copy. Distortion is bad though.Mat Mayerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07387553119545288436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19035680.post-28206648978959584492016-04-29T00:02:05.312+08:002016-04-29T00:02:05.312+08:00If you can find one of these at the right price it...If you can find one of these at the right price it still is a useful addition to your bag - for sure not the sharpest, but great colours and the bokeh looks good too. If focus speed is a problem in street use you can always try zone focusing and have some fun catching those decisive moments.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03191075824488296494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19035680.post-81065586063634255682016-02-27T04:24:33.135+08:002016-02-27T04:24:33.135+08:00Hi Robin
Thanks for your review its been really h...Hi Robin

Thanks for your review its been really helpful as just got the 17mm f2.8 with the external viewfinder and the Olympus EP-1 at a bargain price second hand. I wanted a small camera with a 35mm lens, something I can carry around with me at all times. I have to say, its really not bad and if you can pick the lens up second hand (I got them for £140) - then its really pretty good.

My main camera is a Fuji Xpro 1 with primes - and those lenses are clearly better, APS-C sensor and F1.4, they produce photos with a certain something. So the Olympus clearly isn't as good with 12 megapixel / micro4/3 and f2.9 - but it still takes a sharp picture.

I wonder - how would the F1.8 17mm work on an original EP-1? would it make much difference? But then the whole set up becomes a difference in price.

Anyway - thank you for your review
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10417955440581585417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19035680.post-34148060286841931742015-11-24T11:10:25.761+08:002015-11-24T11:10:25.761+08:00Thanks!Thanks!Robin Wonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02572566037297158455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19035680.post-66330378564186939892015-11-24T11:07:15.756+08:002015-11-24T11:07:15.756+08:00I am not too sure about film quality as I was neve...I am not too sure about film quality as I was never a film user (started photography late). It does not matter what lens you use, if you want good images, pay attention to lighting, composition and subject content. Asking me to use which lens more won't make anything better. Take note that most of the subjects I shoot have well defined lighting with shadow depth and uneven highlights. That created the 3D feel and has nothing to do with lens. There is NO perfect lens. Only lens that is suitable for what you do. Whether it is a 25mm or 45mm it all comes down to what you use the lens for. If you truly are a beginner and you want to learn photography, using the kit lens 14-42mm for a while is not a bad idea. You most used focal length will be your next prime lens to buy.
