Panasonic GH3, Sigma 35mm F1.4 and Tom Truong from Sydney!

Tom Truong, a professional photographer from Sydney, Australia is in town again, and I managed to catch up with him over dinner earlier tonight! Do check out his amazing photography work on his portfolio website here (click). It was great hearing stories from a real, working, professional wedding photographer from another land, and surely there is much to share and learn from each other. He has got his hands on some of the latest and most interesting gear as well, such as the Panasonic GH3, which he intended to use mainly for video shoots. His main gear for his professional work is the Nikon system, and the latest addition to his Nikon was the new and highly raved Sigma 35mm F1.4 lens! Tom exclaimed how amazed he was using the Sigma lens on his Nikon D800!

Initially Tom suggested me to review the Panasonic GH3 (he brought along two lenses with it, the 12-35mm F2.8 as well as the 35-100mm F2.8). I do not have time to spare for reviewing the Panasonic GH3, I really want to, believe me, but I am tied down with my current day engineering job which pretty much sucked out all my free time dry. Then I suggested to Tom, why not he does the review himself, so I can feature him and his GH3 review on my blog here? It would be some sort of like a guest-blogging thing. Tom seemed to like the idea, and surely, he would need time to shoot and compose his review, and lets hope that really will happen!

That GH3, it actually felt like I was holding a real DSLR in hand. Rather large and heavy. It is interesting to see Panasonic taking such different approach on Micro 4/3 system.

Tom Truong from Sydney! He brings beautiful gear such as the Panasonic GH3 and also the new Sigma 35mm F1.4 which he simply loves.

Choon Wee, giving the GH3 a go!

We had Hokkien Mee for dinner

Tom looking through the viewfinder. He loves the silent shutter of GH3!

Choon Wee checking out the Sigma 35mm F1.4, which I think is a brilliant lens. Sharp, and produces smooth, pleasing bokeh.

I am looking forward to this weekend already, and I hope to shoot the streets of KL with Tom!!

  1. sigma lenses have improved over the years.

I have an older bro of the sigma 35mm f1.4, which is the sigma 30mm f1.4 for APS C sensors. Sharp in the center , good subject isolation.

Im not suprised this would be even better.

SIGMA also have launched value for money m43 lenses namely the 30mm f2.8 and the 19mm f2.8. Maybe one day you can review these lenses...I've heard good things about it.

    1. Hello Joshua,
Thanks for the encouragement. I do wish I have the resources and time to review more stuff, but time is limited by my day job, and I don't have the budget to spend on cameras and lenses that I do not use!

  2. I'm not really glad about this new sigma lens 30mm f2,8 for m43. I bought one and it was delivered on wednesday. it looks and feel like a piece of plastic, no compare to the 45mm f1,8 lens from olympus. I'd shot a fiew pictures, but I'd not tested it completly. I'm thinking about giving this lens back...I'll give it a try this weekand and then I'm deciding what I do.

    1. Hello Armin,
Obviously Olympus made very good lenses, with decent build quality, even on cheaper lenses.

    2. Armin,

I have that Sigma 30 for my OMD EM5 and it's image quality is excellent. At it's price point it's a great value. In fact, after getting the 30 for my OMD, I the got the 19 and 30 in E mount for my nex7 when they were on sale for $200 for the pair from B&H+$60 to ship here to Australia. I'd suggest you really give the lens a workout before making your final decision.

Having guests like Tom Truong review gear on your blog will only make an excellent blog like yours, even better ...:):)

  4. Hmmm, might be a good idea to work together from time to time with other pros for reviews.

And yes, that Sigma is a true beauty. Unbelievable IQ, better than the Nikkors, better than even Zeiss Planars and Distagons. One has to see the results to believe it, especially for the money.

BTW the M4/3 Sigmas (19 and 30mm) are very good and quite cheap as well.

  5. I really want to thank you for your reviews and sharing amazing photos! I've been saving for new camera about a year now and have been struggling whether to get Nikon D7100 or Olympus OM-D. I've been reading lots of reviews of both cameras, most of them very full of technical details. Which are of course interesting, but since I'm only an amateur and taking photos for my own amusement (day job is also engineering :) ), I'm more interested of the case examples. Like the ones in your blog. Many times I find chats and reviews only concentrating on one minus side of lens or camera body. Like that one minus side would make the whole product unusable. That might be a case when someone really needs to use any equipment in super challenging conditions. But since I'm not a pro, it's not interesting for me. That's why I like your reviews, you tell how the camera was in real action and in some laboratory conditions. And you do with your own voice. I also find that your reviews are full of great tips! E.g. Macro shooting is one of my favorites and you have some really nice macro photos and reviews! So I thank you once more! I'm going for OM-D, partly because of the size of the camera and partly because reviews like yours have encouraged me to try m4/3. It's also very nice looking gear... I've been Olympus user before, but my camera is ancient E-300, so I think it's time to get some new angles to my hobby :)

  6. BTW. I was suppose to write "in real action and NOT in some laboratory conditions"..

    1. Hello Teresita,
Thanks for taking the time to drop by and say a few words, really appreciate your kind comments! I strongly believe that photography is about shooting and making images, hence practical shooting is the priority when I review the Olympus gear. The technical reviews do have their place, and I chose not to be over-ly technical because many other sites have done the same thing, and it would be redundant to add on more to that.
I am glad you find my review and sharing here useful! Keep shooting and enjoy photography!
