Birthday for Joy

Just a few days after the farewell dinner for Jason and Ming, the gang planned something extra-ordinary for a dear friend Joy, who was celebrating her 21st Birthday. The invitations had been going around in secret, and it was supposed to be a partial surprise celebration. Partial? Because a small group of friends lured her out of her place and when she arrived at the dinner setting, she would be unexpectedly greeted by no less than 10 others already standing by to surprise her.

Aaahhhh… the joy of surprising Joy on her 21st Birthday.

The surprised happened at Little Creatures in Fremantle. It also coincided with the eve of the Mooncake Festival, which I had to skip actually ditched my other friends in order to make it here for the dinner. I have numerously blogged about Little Creatures, it is basically a warehouse look-alike humongous restaurant, with fresh-in house brewed beer, funky atmosphere just perfect for any occasions at all. I shall not go more into detail, and just show some pictures that I have taken that night while waiting for the arrival of Joy.

We sat at one of the superbly long tables, fitting everyone together. Learning from my mistake in the previous entry on the seating position being locked in and preventing me from moving around much, I chose to sit right at the edge this time, enabling me to navigate around with ease. Hence, this time, I have better pictures captured. And I love capturing the smiles of people, it just shows the joy that we were sharing with Joy.

I think Joy was half expecting the surprise plan to happen anyway, so whether the surprise plan worked, it was hard to tell. One would automatically beam in much excitement and laughter at the sight of so many people, regardless whether one was surprised or not. Nevertheless, it was the thought that truly counts, and everyone being there and sharing the joy and laughter just brought up the sense of togetherness and friendship. There is just always something about birthdays that make people go extra-happy temporarily.

I seldom eat at Little Creatures because it is bloody expensive but for that particular night I was craving for Steak. Do not ask me why, all I know, I was extremely hungry, and steak just jumped out all around my mind. And so Steak it was for dinner !!

There was this crazy group of friends with one heck of a crazy idea. They knew that Joy loves Ice-Cream cake, and it was indeed very thoughtful and kind of them to try to make the cake happen for Joy’s 21st birthday. Unfortunately, not much thought and consideration was placed in the conditioning of the cake, since ice cream pretty much melts down rapidly at room temperature. The cake was bought at Subiaco, and was driven around all the way to Fremantle, which took us more than 30 minutes. Ice-cream exposed to room temperature for 30 minutes….. bad idea.

And so, by the time we got to Little Creatures, we requested that the Kitchen staff would quickly place the cake into the Freezer. And so they did…

Until a couple of hours later, after everyone finished eating, the staff came to us and told us that, the freezer was not really “working well”. Goodness…

And here comes the cake….

OUT OF SHAPE !!!

Nevertheless, Ice-Cream is still ice-cream, and a birthday cake is still a birthday cake. No matter what shape it was in, it was the symbol that upholds the meaning of the cake, and the people around to share and take in their part of celebration. And so, the ice-cream cake was ALL eaten. Perfect desert. The cake was FULLY Ice-Cream, freshly made from Il-Gelato which is 100times better than the Gelato in Kuching

All in all, it was really a great birthday celebration, though the cake was all out of shape, but it was still outrageously yummy, and the important part of all, everyone had a great time.

To Joy, I wish you a very Happy Birthday, and may you continue to grow in faith and walk in the Light of Christ.

  3. Yeah u are right! these niche ice cream parlours are popping up all over the island giving ben and jerry's a good fight. but the il gelato in northbridge will always have an (extra) special place in my heart. the countless times i went there at night to have a nice scoop or two of gelato! i'd trade all the ice cream parlours in spore to go back to perth for il gelato any day!

A lot of people would prefer gelare, but to me, gelato is much better. But yeah, now i just follow the crowd, usually ending up at gelare, mainly for the waffles only. LOL

  7. oh i guess cos i usually pop by at exotica for a bit first to check on some old friends of mine before i head to il gelato. maybe thats why i don't get to bump into u lol!

as for gelare all i can say is that after tasting the waffles in perth i can safely say its way better than the ones in spore. the waffles here taste like cardboard yuk! i guess if its not a tuesday then i'll prefer to head to il gelato instead LOL!
